Sun Catcher for Car: How to Hang One in Your Car

Quick Answer: Whether you can hang a sun catcher in a car depends on where you drive. California bars any object that obstructs or reduces the driver's clear view. Vermont applies its hanging-item rule only when an item materially obstructs the view. Minnesota bars objects suspended between the driver and the windshield apart from a short list. Read your own state's vehicle code before you hang one.

A sun catcher in a car is a popular idea, and the rules behind it are not the same everywhere. This post does not give installation or safety advice. It sets out what three state statutes say, what a fire department advises about crystal and glass in direct sun, and what Akitai's own pages say about its car pieces. For the basics of how a sun catcher makes colors, see what a sun catcher is, and for making your own, see Akitai's post on DIY crystal car ornaments.

Is it legal to hang a sun catcher in your car?

It depends on the state, and the wording differs. The table sets out three statutes, read on the legislatures' own sites in October 2026.

StateWhat the statute says
CaliforniaNo object that obstructs or reduces the driver's clear view
VermontHanging items covered only if they materially obstruct the view
MinnesotaNo objects suspended between driver and windshield, apart from a list

California Vehicle Code 26708 bars driving with any object in or on the vehicle that obstructs or reduces the driver's clear view through the windshield or side windows. Vermont's statute, 23 V.S.A. 1125, says its prohibition on hanging items applies only when a hanging item materially obstructs the driver's view.

Minnesota Statutes 169.71 bars "any objects suspended between the driver and the windshield" other than sun visors, rearview mirrors and a short list of equipment such as navigation systems and toll devices. Decorations are not on that list.

What do these laws not say?

They do not name sun catchers, and none of the three texts gives a length, a size or a position that counts as acceptable. No source checked for this post does either. So the same ornament could be treated differently in different states, and this post cannot tell you whether yours is allowed where you drive. Your state's vehicle code, or its motor vehicle agency, can.

Where do Akitai's car sun catchers hang?

Akitai's product pages describe its sun catchers as car mirror ornaments that can also hang anywhere there are windows or mirrors. The rear view mirror tassel in white is the piece closest to this post. Its page describes glass beads and brass on a polyester rope. Since Akitai is the brand behind this site, it is our own product. The red tassel sun catcher is a similar piece, and the whole range is in the sun catcher collection.

The pages do not give a hanging length or say where in a car to place one, and this post does not either. Where you hang it is a question for the statutes above, not for the product page.

What else should you check before hanging one?

Fire risk from direct sun. Snopes (checked October 2026) reports that the Delton Fire Department in Wisconsin traced a house fire on 8 March 2021 to a glass "crystal ball" ornament in direct sunlight. The department advised keeping crystals, mirrors, glass ornaments and bottles out of direct sunlight and away from anything flammable, because they can act like a magnifying glass. That was a house, not a car, and the advice is general.

A sun catcher is a decoration, not a safety device.

Will a sun catcher make rainbows in a car?

Only with direct sun on a clear, faceted piece. Akitai's pages say the beads catch sunlight and spread colors through the car. For the physics, see the guide to how a crystal prism makes rainbows.
